Change Name on Existing Service

When you move into an existing home, business or any place that already has an electric service, you must get the billing account changed into your name. The member’s name listed on a billing account is the person responsible for payments and for the condition of the electric service.

For any service changeovers, Oconto Electric would like contact from both the outgoing member and the incoming member.  Typically “disconnection” occurs in our records only.  The only time power is actually disconnected at an electric service is when there is a period of time when no one is responsible for paying the bill.  To request a change in service, use the “Contact Us” feature on this website or call Oconto Electric’s billing department during normal office hours at 800-472-8410.

 Requesting a Change in Service

When requesting a change in service, the outgoing member must contact OEC to verify that they want the billing account disconnected in their name, give the co-op their new address for the final bill and for future capital credit retirements, and tell the co-op the date the meter should be read.

OEC will also need the following information from the incoming member:

Current address to mail paperwork to,
Address of the property being connected or changed to the new name,
Date change is effective,
Whether new member owns or rents the property and if it is a rental, landlord’s name and contact information (see Landlord/Tenant Policy below)

A membership application will be sent to the new member or you can click here to download and print it. This application must be completed, signed and returned within 5 business days. See the Deposit Policy below to determine whether you will be required to make a cash deposit.

Deposit Policy

Any customer requesting service will be required to provide OEC with a letter of credit from a previous electric utility or OEC can perform a credit check through a credit reporting service. Should the letter of credit or credit check prove to be unsatisfactory, a minimum $250 deposit will be required before the electric service is changed to the new person.

The deposit will be refunded, with interest, after 12 consecutive months of on-time payments. If the electric bill is paid late at any time, the 12 month period starts over from the date the account is brought current.

Landlord/Tenant Account Policy

When a landlord is requesting service be put into a tenant’s name, it is the responsibility of the tenant to pay the electric bill. It is also the responsibility of both parties to inform the cooperative of any changes in the occupancy of the rental unit.  Tenants and/or landlords shall provide the cooperative with the forwarding address for the final bill and future capital credit retirements.

When a landlord has electric service for a rental unit in his/her name, but a renter occupies the residence, the landlord is responsible for paying the electric bill. If a landlord does not pay an electric bill for a rental unit that is in his/her name, the service will be disconnected and any unpaid balance will be transferred to his/her personal electric account which, if not paid in full, will also qualify for disconnection according to cooperative policy.  Oconto Electric reserves the right to deny putting any electric service into a tenant’s name if the account has been delinquent under previous tenants.
